Frequently Asked Questions Q: How should I care for my piano? A: A piano is a magnificent and extremely complex
instrument, with more than 9,000 parts in the key and action combination
alone. The materials that make up your piano are top quality wood of many
species, iron, steel, copper, brass, plastic, wool, cotton as well as various
adhesives, etc. A standard piano has more than 200 strings, and their
combined tension exerts a pull of over 18 tons! That is why it is important
never to attempt repairs or adjustments yourself, and to use a qualified
service technician to perform regular inspections and maintenance on your
instrument. Q: What is “Standard Pitch”? A: Your piano is designed to sound its best when tuned to
A-440, or Standard Pitch. When your piano is tuned to this universally
standard pitch, you can easily play along with other instruments or recorded
music. Keeping instruments tuned to standard pitch is very important for ear
training. Q: How often should I have my piano serviced? A: Most major manufacturers recommend tuning at least
twice a year, or whenever needed. Seasonal changes in temperature and
humidity can affect the sound and may call for a tuning, as well as moving
the instrument, or just because you want it to sound great for a special
event. Q: What are the greatest enemies of my piano’s sound? A: The greatest enemies to the beautiful sound of your
instrument are humidity and temperature fluctuations. Environmental swings
from hot to cold or from humid to dry are extremely harmful to your piano,
causing delicate parts to swell and then shrink, and strings to go sharp and
then flat. Repeated swings in relative humidity can cause soundboards to
distort or even crack, and extreme dryness can weaken glue joints in the
action. Keeping the conditions consistent works best, with an optimal
temperature of 68° F,
and 42 % relative humidity.
